Emmaus: Here's a personal opinion for once. Emmaus projects are suitable for some people and not others, I am not suitable for Emmaus, or the other way round.
Emmaus provides accommodation, in return they get housing benefit for you and you stop receiving your benefits and get pocket money from them instead, and you have to work for them, usually 40 hours a week, they provide a room, usually nice and en-suite and in a nice house with communal everything and activities and unlimited tea and coffee, but your life is not your own, this lifestyle is suited to recovering or recovered alcoholics or addicts who are looking to rebuild their lives, it is not asuitable for a loner who craves peace and quiet and privacy.
Basically when I think of Emmaus a big horrified NO! forms in my mind.
They tend to get the residents to work really hard collecting and restoring second hand furniture and selling it on in their charity shops at high prices, and I think whoever runs Emmaus does well out of it, in return for 'rehabilitation' of people who need that kind of help.
