Danger:
A reality of homeless life. sleeping outdoors is potentially dangerous. Danger comes from all directons when you are without four walls, a roof and a lockable door.
Murder, rape, robbery, illness, arrest, assault, mental illness, starvation, injuries, weather damage, and any other danger you can imagine are dangers that homeless people face. It is not a 'safe' life.
Being sensible can help make the dangers less. Sleep hidden but not isolated, use whatever light you have to check your sleeping place for potential dangers such as needles, ant hills, broken glass etc. Be careful who you trust, don't tell anyone where you sleep, unless you are finding safety in communal sleeping with other homeless people, in which case everyone knows where you sleep, which brings a kind of safety of it's own, isolated homeless such as me could starve or become seriously ill without being found, as demonstrated on Tuesday when I couldn't walk to get food or help and I had no money or credit.
Keep your valuables with you, and only have what you need, stash everything else as securely as possible, look after your health, if you have a problem then drive the medical staff mad unti lthey help you properly, if you are hungry then tell someone, anyone, don't ask for money, ask for food, people don't like leaving other people hungry, food is a bnasic need and the world is full of kind people and kind outreach who will feed you.
A lot of dangers can be avoided by staying sober and not using drugs and not getting into fights, you can choose your friends to a certain extent even on the streets, and how you fare can depend on good safe friends.
Looking after your hygeine and health does make a difference. I wash every day, shower when I can, take medicines regularly and look for theraputic help, elusive as it is, and get medical help for anything, if you get worms from eating other people's leftover takeaway a doctor can give you a simple tablet to get rid of them, if you don't get that tablet you can end up very ill indeed, so it is as simple as that, the streets are hellish dangerous but why be scared of that, there are ways of surviving, excuse me all you old street dwellers who think this is patronizing :)
